This responded to the prompt: Use a little-known fact and tie it to something important. I used it to start a teacher evaluation.
I recently read that crocodiles lay up to 60 eggs at a time and, unlike other reptiles, do not abandon them to fend for themselves. Once the mother hears the infant squeaking inside the egg, she stays in constant communication with it, nudging it toward the river edge where it can hatch safely. It made me think of teaching: some students may judge you to be ugly and thick-skinned, but you’re right there listening for that squeak of comprehension or questioning, and nudging the newbie toward his natural habitat. And you don’t abandon the ones that take a while to hatch.
